Foreword alterNatives was a difficult play for me to write. Within the world it encompasses, I had to weigh social debate, cultural conflicts, stereotypes, Judeo-Ojibway relations, and a honking big hunk of moose. Just your average day in the urban Native community, I guess. In my years of travel and meeting people, I have always been amazed by what people would say to me, or what they would think about me (both Native and non- Native.) And as I moved through this complex world, I would record, somewhere in the back of my mind, these little nuggets of conversation, of impressions, of reality that I planned to come back and visit some day, because . the world is a very interesting place. And here we are now. Within the pages of this play, I can safely say that just under ninety percent of what you will read is true, accurate, and real. I only invented the situation and the names, which account for the remaining ten percent of the content. Humanity created the rest of the story. I've always been a believer that reality is a much better writer than I could ever be.
